The Mid-Atlantic Region began in Maryland in 1988 by taking over the operation of the Thomas O’Farrell Youth Center, a juvenile justice facility. NAFI’s achievements at the Youth Center brought new challenges and opportunities in the region, including the creation of the first Aftercare program to help adjudicated youth make a successful transition from residential care to their homes, schools and neighborhoods. The Aftercare program proved so successful that eventually the approach became a requirement for all residential programs in the State of Maryland – another tribute to a dedicated and visionary NAFI team.
In 2000, NAFI initiated the first juvenile justice oriented Wrap Around Program in Baltimore City. Concurrently they also created a project to train Baltimore City Police recruits to improve their understanding and communication skills with urban adolescents. Called the Youth Initiative Training, the Baltimore Police Department has now expanded this NAFI training to help veteran officers improve their interactions with youth.
Center as well as Egenton House, a group home for 12 girls in the heart of Baltimore City. In early 2005, NAFI added Harbor House to its program services, providing Baltimore City with its first inner city youth shelter.
The Mid-Atlantic regional team continues to develop new opportunities in Maryland, cultivating and celebrating diversity. We have focused on the needs of urban youth and families and have developed numerous creative trainings and partnerships with corporations, government agencies and faith groups.
